Damien Martinez talks 75-yard TD run in scrimmage, competition at running back

Like Willis McGahee in 2002, Damien Martinez hopes to introduce himself as a premier Canes back in the Swamp. He spoke with reporters about his big run in the scrimmage, the running back room and more:

On his progress in camp: Just getting closer with the whole team on the field, rather than off the field. Talking more ball with them, getting finer details down so we can take care of business for the season.

On how the running back room is splitting reps: There's only going to be one running back on the field at a time, but we really don't focus on competing against each other. We feed off each other's energy when we're in practice, just hyping each other up so we can do our job. We don't want to have a drop-off in the game. If someone goes down, it’s the next man up. That’s the mentality.

On the strength of the running back room: Our bond and our mentality. We all have that same mentality that we don't want to have no drop off in the room. We make sure to keep the main thing the main thing. We focus on keeping everybody up, because if one drops that energy kind of affects everyone. We want to make sure everybody's doing their job.

On comparing youth football in Miami and Texas (Martinez attended a game this past weekend): It's very similar. I was kind of surprised the games were jumping like that out here, especially how hot it is. It was jumping for real. I was telling people about the blur thing (SEE HERE) . You always see videos online and stuff like that. But being in person here, it was kind of crazy for the crowd.

On whether his 75-yard TD run was live or during the “thud” period: It was during the live-scrimmage portion.

On talking trash: It's kind of a tradition thing, running backs and linebackers. It's talking trash because we tend to meet in the hole. Kiko [Mauigoa], Jaylin Alderman and Wesley [Bissainthe].

On what stands out about Cam Ward: His leadership. Just how detailed he is, how detailed he wants everybody to be. Little details, just helping people play faster. That’s going to help the team come out on top. If you're thinking too much, you're not going to play as fast. It’s how detailed he is and how detailed he wants everybody to be so he can compete at the highest level.

On pass blocking: It's something we work every day. You want to keep the quarterback protected. It’s an important part of the game.

At 13:57 watch Damian Martinez absolutely destroy a DE rushing in and pancakes him at the end.

WOW!!!!

While it was a great pickup and block and technically was a pancake, let's sprinkle a bit of reality on top. The DE was in a compromised position with another player or two on the ground behind him that he tripped over. Don't take this comment personally. As a former OL, I get a little overly sensitive with some of these details. Just to show that I'm not a total cuck, yes, it was a terific block FOR A RB!!!

Go Canes!

Keep the main thing the main thing…..Mario has these young men focused and not looking ahead. Which is a big deal because I think past teams have gotten caught looking past teams - here’s to hoping that has been remedied.

If we don’t know anything else we know that Mario can get a team ready for a big game - wins vs A&M, 1 possession loss vs FSU with a backup QB, and monster win vs Clemson. Emory doesn’t go down I still believe we win at FSU, that kid is a frickin gamer

Yeah I see what your saying but his block in that video is better than any block I've seen from a UM RB in years.

Not sure where you played OL at but your observation is not it bro. Martinez stopped the DE's rush causing the DE to be off balance. It was Martinez himself that put the DE in the "compromised position." He then continued to follow through with his block (as he should) and absolutely pancaked him. Zero clue in where you see anything other than that.

Primero, tu puedes mamar mis huevos, entonces tu puedes disfrutar el sabor de mi salchico para el desrespeto, pendejo. Lo no estaba necesario.

Ok, now that I got that out of my system, I snipped a few points of the rush. Initial contact (DM 1) is in the first photo. Slight advantage to DE. DM2 shows Martinez resetting and getting a little help from #70. DM3 shows Martinez in excellent position, great base and pad level. Great hand placement. DM4 shows Martinez beginning to push the rusher into the back of #67. DM5 is where "the pancake" happens... after the rusher made contact with #67. DM6 shows Martinez fully on top of the rusher, pancaking him.

I don't get the unnecessary anger and aggression you took with the first sentence of your reply. I gave him credit for an excellent block by a RB - which it is. It's also a wash-out pancake aided by "traffic" rushing the passer. Want to see a "real" pancake? Got to the 8 second mark of this clip:

It's when Francis destroyed that DB from Louisville. Yes, unfair matchup weight and size wise. However it was in open space, unaided. This is the disctinction I was trying to make.

Now that we've finished our lesson and you (and the rest of CiS) can see "where I saw any of that,", I'm happy to answer your question. I was an All-County guard and DT in the Midwest many years ago. And not one of those counties in rural America with a population of 10,000. It was alarge suburban county with a population over 750,000. I was recruited by smaller schools, not the big boys, because I'm 6' tall (on a good day), not 6'4". I didn't want to play D2 or D3 football, so I used my academics to get accepted to Miami. I thought about walking on until I saw Kerlin Blaise on the HurryCanes shuttle and quickly thought "F this, I'll have more fun drinking beer in the stands."

What makes you qualified to offer your INCORRECT assesment?

Bro

Bro, relax! If you took my take as coming off aggressive or insulting, you're a snowflake. Bragging to be "ALL COUNTY" is not a flex bro. Seriously, don't ever brag about that on here. People here are diabolical and you will get roasted for that. (Just my advice)

Anywho...I was questioning in what you saw because I saw Martinez make initial contact on the video that cascaded into the DE getting knocked off his lane. So, basically, you confirm that Martinez DID pancake the DE. Nowhere in all that F - project you put together does it clearly show what you are saying. Bro, seriously, the mere fact that you brought your JV-esque past on here to critique a legitimate D1 player while confirming that said D1 player pancaked his target speaks volumes.

To be clear again, I wasn't attacking you, just disagreeing with your response to the other poster. Happens here all the time, it's what us posters do on here. Your profile name says you have a "big one" yet you melt so easily over someone questioning your take? Relax man. You need thick skin on this site. Can't take **** personal...it ain't. I played D1 baseball (somewhere in south Florida for a school that currently has an MLB coach in the American League). :apple:

Not pretending to be a subject matter expert in football. I merely stated my observation, which by your overall and disjointed account, wasn't wrong at all.

Regardless, we can agree to disagree and leave it at that. Fact is, we love the Canes. Btw, I am Class of 97 (Winter Session - Wellness Center). We may have crossed paths in those shuttles!

P.S. I lived in Mahoney (3rd Floor) my first couple years next to Blaise, Kenard Lang, and Yatil Green. Even played summer ball with Kenard Lang when he was dabbling the idea of trying to play baseball at The U. You are correct that them dudes were insane big. GO CANES!!!

What are you talking about my guy??? You responded to the wrong poster my dude
