Commitment Reaction: Travis Johnson

While Johnson is listed as a Wide Receiver on most sites, I don't expect him to play that position primarily at Miami. Look for him to have no set position, as he is extremely versatile. Standing at about 6'2-6'3, he has a wide lower base that makes him look more like a tight end. His speed isn't great, but he is smooth as a route runner and has incredible hands. At Saturday's camp, I did not see him drop a single pass. He looked pretty good in the short amount of time that I saw him doing blocking drills. He looks raw in that department, but has the body to develop and improve at it no doubt. You will see him all over the field at Miami, possibly playing an Aaron Hernandez type of role. He can play in the slot and cause mismatch problems, play outside against smaller corners, or even play as a natural tight end on the line. This addition compliments the other two tight ends in the class perfectly. Despite speculation that Jeremy Kerr may be moved to OL, I think he will be used as a blocking tight end and don't see him moving to the line. Standish Dobard is an athletic freak who is the most balanced of the three, and Johnson will be the receiving threat. Overall, I love the pick-up and think the staff did a great job with these three because they all have different strengths.

ESPN has him ranked as the 11th best WR and our 2nd best prospect so far. So much for rivals 3star ranking, and the 50th best WR. This disparity just proved my point about these different sites. So I will trust my coaches evaluation, especially when he goes out there and earn it. Great pickup guys.

I'm still speculating that Jeremy Kerr will develop into an Eric Winston type of player at Miami

Hopefully a rich man's Tervaris Johnson (who had a **** fine Senior year).

Peter,

Is Johnson like Robert Williams? As many of you remember Mr. Williams was a very highly touted WR (I "believe" he was ranked higher as a WR than Wayne, Moss, and Darrel Jones). Williams out grew the WR position and became a serviceable TE.

Why can't this kid be a thick body WR ala malcolm floyd @ ND?

Reminiscent of another tweeter from that area, maybe a little slower but also bigger: Orson Charles.

Love this pick-up. Kid is a versatile athlete that can play next to the T or split out wide.

dude has been offered by **** near everybody (according to Rivals)

This is a great pick-up for 2 reasons:

1) Another quality athlete/player from the Tampa area. AG continues to be a major presence in one of the most talent-rich areas in the state.

2) The kid WANTS to be here and put in the work to get the offer, even with all the offers he already had. Also gives the offense another versatile threat.

I was BIG on this kid from DAY ONE....

Receiving threat that u split out wide against backers and let him eat them up.....when he gets in the weightroom he will fill out quickly and be a big timer.....

I'm comparing him to a poor man's Kellen Winslow...as far as route running and strong hands.

Kid is best friends with Vernon Hargreaves, Richard Middleton, Jordan Sherit.. also knows current guys like (antonio Crawford, Chick)

Here's a video from a year ago, you can see that all three guys are well verse and seem to be smart kids...

lol @ the 6minute mark.,..and all 3 said they love the u because we have "swag" or were "swagged out"...and Travis Johnson chimes in with our draft rate.....Golden's about to lock down the TAMPA area completely in my opinion.

look at the kids size and hands in a few clips from March @ a 7 on 7

@ .36 second mark, 1:23, 1.34, 3.30, 3.48, 3.52,4.12, 4.25, 6.34-7.13 kid catches 3 in a row

+ he seemed to be dominating the tourney...has size and even shows a bit of run after catch ability even though its just 7 on 7..you can tell he isnt a stiff out there...

LOVE THIS PICK UP....Have been calling for him from the jump.
