2021 Southwest DT Savion Collins committed to the Hurricanes late Sunday night after visiting campus for practice.
The 6-4 265 pounder is currently unranked right now in the national rankings, as only a few 2021 prospect have such a designation. His commitment only helped UM’s #1 class ranking on 247Sports.
The Player
The story of how he got offered by UM is a little interesting. Collins was basically an unknown until he showed up at one the Miami summer camps on campus back in June. Collins didn’t even work out, but earned his offer from the UM staff based only on the eye test. A UM staffer told me, “Kids like that don’t grow on trees.” I was out there and saw him and he was extremely well-built for a rising sophomore; he was easily one of the most physically impressive kids there as an underclassman among seniors.
Collins doesn’t have a lot of tape: his freshman film is less than a minute long. Right away, you can see he is powerful at the point of attack. He carries some brute force in upper body and can become an anchor against double teams as he continues to grow. I’d like to see his athleticism and quickness show up more on tape, as a lot of times he seemed sluggish off the ball and caught up on blocks. However, he showed off impressive straight line speed to help chase down a ball carrier 50 yards downfield on one play. Collins is off to a good start as a sophomore for Southwest, recording 9 tackles and 3 TFL from the interior of the defense through 3 games.
The main takeaway here is Miami is really projecting out here based on physical traits and not production, which a lot of times hasn’t worked out so well for them in the past, but it’s a case of them trying to get on a local kid early before he blows up. Miami was his first offer and already other Power 5 schools like UF and NC State are becoming involved and starting to sniff around.

Being nearly three years from the class of 2021’s signing day, it’s difficult to accurately predict how the numbers will shake out for this class with so many variables still undetermined. There are no other offerees at defensive tackle in the 2021 class as of yet. There’ll only be two DT’s from the current roster that will be around when Collins makes it to campus. Obviously, Miami will be taking multiple defensive linemen in the 2019 and 2020 classes as well to help balance the numbers.

Assuming there’s no attrition, the DT’s from the current roster that will still be on campus when Collins arrives in 2021 are Nesta Silvera and Jordan Miller. In 2019, Miami has commitments from Jason Munoz, Jalar Holley, and Jason Blissett at defensive tackle, and in 2020, UM has pledges from Tre'von Riggins and Willie Moise, with more additions possible in the future.
Collins will battle with all these players for snaps in the rotation as a freshman and is physically developed enough to have a chance at seeing solid playing time early on. With the current depth chart completely cleared out by 2022, there’s a good chance Collins is battling to start by his sophomore season.
