During the Miami Hurricanes’ search for a second running back in the class, 2021 Carol City (FL) 3-star RB Katravis Geter became the latest name to appear on the board after RB coach Eric Hickson and one of Miami’s newest graduate assistants offered him last night.
“One of my old coaches, Benedict Hyppolite, he called me just to check on me and tell me that Miami’s been watching me and that I’ve been on their radar,” Geter said. “A couple of hours later, coach Hickson called me and he was talking about how he saw my top 5 and he hopes that things could change now that they’re going to be offering me. I can’t really explain it, I’m just overwhelmed receiving the offer from them.”
Both the tradition of NFL success for Hurricanes running backs and the local feel of UM is what is drawing Geter to the Miami program right now.
“I know they’ve been putting out a lot of great backs for a long time – Frank Gore, Willis McGahee,” Geter said. “It feels great, because this is my hometown, I’m from Miami. All I know is seeing them play a lot, watching Miami. My dad is a big UM fan and it runs in the family. I love everything about Miami – I love the Dolphins, I love the Heat, and I love UM.”
Along with all the aspects of Miami that Geter already loves, the Canes got a serious makeover on the field this offseason when they changed their offensive scheme to the spread, something Geter sees as complimenting his playing style.
“It’s similar to what we run over at Carol City, we run that spread,” Geter said. “Coach Hickson said I’d fit great in their offense.”
On the current Miami roster, Geter said he is friendly with both Mark Pope and Jaylan Knighton. The Canes took a strong RB class last cycle, adding local studs Knighton and Don Chaney in the 2020 class, but Geter said he’s not concerned about that.
“I’m not worried about it - anywhere you go, there’s going to be competition,” Geter said. “I just want to have a fair chance to compete.”
The 5-10 195 pound back was last on campus at Miami for a 7-on-7 tournament last summer, but he is one of the first prospects UM is looking to bring in once the coronavirus shutdowns end.
“It’s very nice there and I like the new indoor facility that they built not too long ago, I got to play inside of it,” Geter said of UM. “[Hickson] told me as soon as this quarantine thing ends, that he wants me to get on campus.”
On Monday, Geter released his top 5 schools over Twitter, naming Florida, Georgia, Penn State, West Virginia, and Georgia Tech to the list. With the Canes now involved though, he doesn’t rule out shaking up that group in the future.
“Anything can change at any given moment,” Geter said. “Of my top 5, those were the schools that always kept in touch so far through my recruitment process, they were always in touch the most. Even during this break, that’s all they do – call me every day, text me every day, check up on me every day. But now that UM offered, anything can change at any given time, it’s all about relationships. They have a chance.”
Out of his top group, Geter has previously visited Georgia and Florida, and was planning to visit the Bulldogs again in March before the coronavirus concerns shut down campuses across the country.
“With Georgia, I just like the relationship they’ve built with me,” Geter said. “They’re always checking up on me asking how’s school is going on and off the field. On my visit, I sat with some of the coaches and some of the players, we did a tour of their facilities. It just reminded me of home and it’s also not far from home, so if anything happens, my family can always come visit me. Distance from home is something I think about, but it’s not a problem for my family to come see me wherever I go.”
With Geter on track to be an early enrollee for next spring, he says you can expect a decision to come following his senior season in December.
“First thing I’m looking for will be academics,” Geter said. “You’ve got to stay focused in the classroom, so I want to go somewhere with a good academic program. Second, I just want to go somewhere that I can compete. As long as a school gives me a chance to compete, I’m fine with that. Also, the pipeline of who puts players in the NFL and gives me the best chance to go to the next level. I want to go somewhere that I feel loved, a place where I can feel like I’m at home with my parents.”
