Canes Covos: Johnson not ready to quit, Garvin playing for the seniors

After another crushing loss for the Miami Hurricanes last week, this time to Georgia Tech, you could say the season hasn’t quite gone as Jaquan Johnson planned it. The senior safety had a chance to go pro after a breakout junior season, but stayed at UM because he felt Miami had a chance to win championships in 2018.

“It meant everything to me, it still means everything to me even though we are not going to be able to do that,” Johnson said. “Just finishing out these last games and playing for The U. A lot of people want to come here and play. I had the opportunity to play for this University. And I am able to do that.”

Has he felt the season has been a disappointment?

“It’s just a wakeup call. Every year is a new year,” Johnson said. “You have to reestablish yourself, that is one of the main things I took from it; even myself as a player. You have to reestablish yourself, re-focus, because nothing will be handed to you. Games are hard to win. Getting better is hard to win every day.”

With the Coastal division now out of reach, Johnson says the team is now focusing on simply reaching a bowl game.

“It means a lot, we want to win a bowl game. We do not want to miss out on a bowl game,” Johnson said. “We are working hard to get a win, those guys we worked with in the summer and the spring, we developed that bond. They know it is our last year and they do not want to leave us behind, so we are working hard to get one.”

After the GT loss, Johnson posted a “We are not going to quit” tweet on his Twitter account, to let everyone know that the team isn’t ready to fold these last two games.

“After that loss, I already knew what was coming. A lot of fan talk, a lot of media talk, and I just wanted the team, plenty of the players follow me on twitter, to see that the leader, he is not quitting,” Johnson said. “He is not relenting at all. He is still going to go out and do everything he has to do, to try and get us a W and get us to a bowl game.”

UM hopes the fifth time is the charm, as they again go for their sixth win of the season against Virginia Tech this weekend.

“Well, both teams are going to come out and we both want that win,” Johnson said. “I mean, it is going to be a battle. All four quarters. Looking forward to it… That’s a physical team. Nice receivers on the outside. Playmakers. A quarterback orchestrating. We have our hands full, but I think we are ready.”

**According to sophomore DE Jon Garvin, the mindset of the team is simple going into VT: do your job.

“Do your assignments, because the things that really cost us in past games was not doing your assignments, that allowed big explosive plays that hurt us,” Garvin said. “We played hard but it wasn’t enough, so we’ve got to make sure to do our assignments.”

Has he tried to convince junior DE Joe Jackson to stay for his senior season?

“That’s a time for after the season, right now we have to focus on this season,” Garvin said.

Playing for the seniors and reaching a bowl game has become the most important thing for Garvin and the rest of his teammates.

“That’s really the number one thing right now, above personal goals because it’s our senior’s last chance, they came back to give us a chance to win, things didn’t go as planned so we owe it to them to get into a bowl game,” Garvin said. “It’s difficult right now for us to sit there and see them going through what they are going through. You know, things didn’t go out as planned so we are going to bust our behinds and try and get them to a bowl. Do the best we can.”

**Getting to a bowl and winning for the seniors has become the main goal for senior DT Gerald Willis.

“That is our main goal, just getting to a bowl game. Just finishing out strong,” Willis said. “Especially getting the seniors to a bowl game… It means that [the team] cares and they still willing to work hard on the practice field and keep giving their all.”

Last week, Willis had admitted that some had advised him to shut his season down and save himself for the NFL, and nothing has changed despite another loss for the Canes.

“My goal is to still play as many snaps as I can in a Miami Hurricane uniform; keep finishing out strong,” Willis said. “I am not going to lay back and just not play. I am just going to keep playing with my teammates, man, and just keep giving them my all.”

Even though VT is struggling with a 3 game losing streak of their own, Willis is certain the Hokies will be up for this game and that UM will never be overlooked.

“We are Miami, you know everybody we play, they play as hard as they can,” Willis said. “Like I said, each and every other week we are up for the challenge and we are ready to try and win out and get a bowl game.”

**Senior LB Mike Smith is playing in his final games as a Miami Hurricane, but he said he is worried about finishing the season strong as to help the team going into 2019.

“We need to go get a win. That is all we need,” Smith said. “Getting a win would cure a lot of things around here. That’s how you get the spring rolling for the streak to start out next year, too.”

How has practice been the past few days?

“We just know that every day is another day to get better,” Smith said. “That’s the only thing we can focus on right now, just try to make ourselves better individually, and as a team. That’s about it.”

It sucks that the players take it so personally, but as a fan it's hard not to be ****ed at the staff. This was completely avoidable, but here we are hoping to beat a team having it's worst year in forever so we can go to a sht bowl.

The other teams explosive plays hurt the the Miami Hurricanes defense?? Hmmmm that's odd🤔🙄

I mean u got some who legit @ these guys on social media so it’s hard not to take it personally and have a us against the world mentality. South fla fan bases are the most fair weathered fan in the nation. That’s a fact. It is what it is from that standpoint. But yeah this year has been a disappointment. But avoidable nah. We as a base drank the kool-aid. But the in hindsite the signs was there for the issues on this team especially offensively. We knew are line was sorry. We knew the QBs was shaky. We knew we could t get hit in the TE room. Therefore the O has been simplified and we tried to outexecute . We knew the punt game was ***..tbh if I wasn’t a die hard canes fan and objective looked this team I could see up and down type season.. fans thought/think are athletes are so much better. But great teams have starting level talent in their 1st 42..we don’t rn

Completely avoidable. We weren't going to go undefeated, but 10 wins was entirely doable and 9 should have been the floor.

Yes, we have personnel issues, but not to the point that we should have lost more than 1 of the last 4. When I say avoidable I mean that Richt could have made some adjustments to cover for out crap OL and shaky QB. Go read any of the post game breakdowns posted on this board (start here: https://www.canesinsight.com/threads/after-the-storm-gt.140268/) and you'll see that people who know a lot more than I do are saying that Richt's play calling isn't helping his team. He's not calling plays that get our athletes 1 on 1 with defenders so they can use their talents. He's not calling simple, short throws to get his QBs into a groove early in games. He constantly calls slow-developing plays on 3rd and long when you know the pass rush will be on and our OL sucks. He's calling the same plays in the same situations as if opposing DCs won't have watched any film.

We've got issues that couldn't be fixed this season, but then again we have issues that could. We weren't going to have a great offense this year, but we didn't need to. We just needed mediocre and that was within reach if Richt had just tried.

Players ain't quit; only some of da fans.

I feel terrible for the players.

It's not the players fault the BOT and our AD hired a busted, old, tired wannabe.

It's not the players fault that Richt is living twenty years in the past.

It's not the players fault we're all sick and tired of this half-assed crap the University keeps putting in front of us.

Even if you use a coin to select from a couple coaches - half the time you should hit a good coach!

How do these retards hire four zero's in a row?

Oh. And how many TIMES will they hire a zero - and prematurely give these same zero's - EXTENSIONS?

No, I've felt bad for the players since Clappy's Year Three - when it started becoming clear that Butch's guys were no longer there to make him look good - he had to evaluate his own talent - recruit his own players - develop his own players - and start acting like a coach.

Cant fix this oline. I’m sorry man just can’t. I’ve seen ppl say “scheme guys open” or game plan for a certain team every week. Truth is no team in CFB does that. U might some things that u hope u can get to in the right situation to exploit something but that’s about it. Fans on this board chart our plays and their predictability. But if you follow any team as closely as we do the canes u can do the same. Not saying this relates to you personally..for the 3rd down and long play calling, no team in American has 20 plays in their playbook for 3rd and 10+ because no team in America see executing that down/ distance as a winning strategy. We’ve been tried screens. Against GT we couldn’t even execute those facets because guys on the edges are getting beat or our oline can’t execute them..saying we don’t call simple routes early in games..that goes back to down n distance..if u run the ball on 1st n 2n down u don’t and should not expect to be in 3rd and 7+. There’s only soo much u can do for a sorry *** oline and shaky QB play. One, implement a short pass game to help that oline. Well that usually works when u at least have a consistent passer. Admittedly we don’t. With a shaky QB you’d like to lean on a veteran oline to control things up upfront. Our is admittedly ***. So when you have shaky QB play to go along with *** oline play..u can’t overcome that. If u can give me an example of a single team that can..let me know..and last..with the oline being trash and the QBs shaky..and one true explosive guy on the outside with no 82 you’d love to lean on field position and the D. Well you can’t do that with a punter who’ u simply hope can average 35 yards a punt. You can give teams 55-60 yard fields throughout a game and expect to win majority of them..when I sit back n look at our season without my orange n green shades, the holes are glaring..once again just my opinion. It’s on Richt and this staff or whoever he brings in to get this problems fixed. Next year he won’t have me saying/defending/rationalizing a season like this. Always point to year 4-5 for a coach to see where the program is heading. Next year the oline will be his guys who most have 2+ years in his program. The QBs will be his guys. Running back also his guys. That team will be majority his guys. We’ll see what we have. Then we can evaluate the program as a whole imo

I'm not talking about specific plays to exploit specific teams. I'm talking about designing plays so that our WR don't end up in the same spot. Plays designed to isolate one of our guys 1 on 1 so he can try to make a play. I'm talking about not running the dive on 3rd down every single time. Seriously, unless Richt is trying to set Clemson up for the 2019 ACCCG, I don't see the point in running the exact play opposing DCs have seen on tape every 3rd down. I'm talking about no running the same wildcat play that worked on 3rd down in the redzone last time you were there again. Go ahead and run the wildcat, but do something different with it. Try to confuse the D a little bit. We literally do nothing that might confuse the other team. We rely solely on out-exacuting them which is great when it works, but why not give yourself every advantage?

Regarding OL/QB, there are in fact things you can do, at least with Perry. Perry makes mistakes, but he's shown he's got the ability to put the ball where it needs to be. Start the game off with some quick throws he's got a good chance of making. If the D gives it to you throw that bubble screen Richt used to love. Gains a few yards and your QB feels good about the completion. Don't come out and run up the middle twice forcing a 3rd and 7...now everybody knows you're going to pass and you really are screwed. Once you've to the D thinking about the pass a little, the running gets easier. In a few of those post-game recaps there were SS of the slot running open on 3rd and short. Clear as day, that guy can run 5 yds, turn around and be wide open. That's a throw Perry can make, and if you do it a few times the D will have to cover more ground. That helps out your 3rd down dive play.

For 3rd and long, most teams concentrate on getting the ball to a quick guy short and hope he can make the play. We run a play that requires our OL to hold the rush for 5 seconds (which we know beforehand they can't do) then for the QB to make the right read and put the ball where it needs to be. I'm actually all for running a 20 yd pass route on 3rd and 16, but we just don't have the OL for it. Run a screen or something else short that you can complete.

Look, none of this is foolproof or guaranteed to get us wins, but it could be helpful. And at this point why keep insisting on what isn't working? Why not try something else?

Look at the title "playing for the seniors" thats all u gotta read to know that they dont believe in the staff.
