C Tanner Smith commits to Miami

Canes Baseball filled one of its biggest needs with the addition of Oregon State transfer C Tanner Smith.

Smith is considered an impact defensive catcher with a 54.2% caught stealing rate (13/24) and strong framing skills. He started 95 games for the Beavers and put up a .221/.359/.423 slash line (.782 OPS) with 5 HRs and 19 RBIs.

The Canes struggled defensively last year, with Jack Scanlon only throwing out 24% of runners (6 of 25). Smith is expected to be a major defensive upgrade (one passed ball versus 10 for Scanlon), and was a superior hitter to Scanlon based on their PAC-12 performance.

Smith joins OF Max Galvin, OF Bobby Marsh, OF Derek Williams, 1B Todd Hudson, RHP Griffin Hugus, LHP Rob Evans, RHP Reese Lumpkin, RHP Will Smith and RHP Carson Fischer in Miami’s Portal class.

Hope he contributes to great success, that’s about all I got. Oh and also drove through Corvallis a couple weeks back, beautiful country and quite the contrast to CG.

Wish we had a football stadium like Reesers.

One thing I’ll add: this was a priority target for Miami. They badly wanted to upgrade the defense and Smith was one of the better catcher gloves in the nation.
Outside of Pitcher what other positions they in the market for? I'd assume short stop and infielder?

lol we’re a complete joke. .221 over 95 games??

Guess we’re at the stage of accepting mediocrity - if we can even call this portal “haul” that.

At this point shut the program down until someone has the balls to clean the ENTIRE house!

I have no issue with this pickup, if he is an elite defender who can throw out runners at a high rate. Let him bat 9th and provide great defense.

Scanlon's offense was non-existent prior to 2024, so there's hope for this kid I guess.

If I'm looking for the silver lining, I hope it means our next two position player transfers will have middle of the order P4 slash lines.

.221 in college is pathetic lol especially in a conference like the PAC-12 that was very down this year. Hope he excels behind the plate, this team will have trouble scoring runs if they can’t add at least two bonafide studs in the portal.

We are such a joke of a program I don’t even know what to say at this point.

“Attacking the portal aggressively with a plan”

🤣 would love to see that plan in writing holy ****.
Next level innovation.

Recruit ineffective pitchers that can't throw strikes but have great spin rates.

Recruit catcher that's best trait is "framing pitches" so that we can bamboozle umps into calling some strikes for the pitchers who can't throw strikes.

This **** is comical lol. I can't believe there's actually a few ppl that think this plan will be successful. Unless the next 3 pick ups are absolute game changers, we're gonna fckin suck *** lol.

The bar is definitely dropping. I noticed this year when I saw ppl talking like Zeihl is an actual ace. Ace of a ****** team sure, but in no way ace of an Omaha team.

I’m probably one that was call Gage an ace. He isn’t top tier but absolutely ace worthy. I don’t see a need to go at him here either. But..

Ziehl would be at worst the 2nd best starter on that Tennessee team. I’m not high on Drew Beam, their self-proclaimed ace, either.. and Ziehl had better numbers than him anyway despite the vast difference in coaching and development. I think he’d be the best arm in the starting rotation on the national championship team’s staff. At worst their #2 guy.

He threw 25.2 innings in 4 games against teams that were in Omaha at a 3.15 ERA and 20 K’s. Another 37 IP, 3.08 ERA, and 29 K’s in 5 games against teams that made the tournament (2 games against the national 2 seed hosting a super regional).

Not sure there’s a more battle tested big game arm out there aside from the clear cut Chase Burns, Hagen Smith, etc.

Only 1 guy above him was in Omaha…

Everything else you said.. absolutely. I think we’ve made needed additions to the lineup and wil actually be formidable. The starting rotation is going to be completely bare after the draft. Without addressing that there’s no way to comment on any expectations. Current outlook… we won’t win 25 games if our 3 starters go to the MLB and we roll with what we have from HS and the portal.

Ziehl had that bulldog, heart of a lion mentality. Hard to measure that but he balled up this year for sure.

I get it, everything sucks. But the kid's best trait isn't framing pitches. He threw out over 50% of base stealers, which is nothing to scoff at this day and age.

And, Ziehl was 1st team all-conference (a conference that sent 4 teams to Omaha). Not sure the need for the slander there.

I'm not trying to go at Gage, I'm just talking about our standard. He has a career ERA over 4.00.

To his credit, he seems to have came on late in the season, which is well after I stopped watching that ****** team on a consistent basis.

I'm just saying, we need pitchers like that covid season staff. Now that was staff that can take us where we should all want to go.

Anyway, not to make this about Gage. I just meant our standard as a whole for our team pitching (and hitters) has dropped from what it was a decade ago.

He leaves a lot to be desired. Jack provided us w/ another bat, Tanner is a career **** poor hitter w/ little pop. The only thing he may provide is defense, although I can unequivocally tell u the speed in the ACC dwarfs PAC-12 speed which is why both Oregon St & Oregon were ushered out the NCAAT expeditiously. I call this portal pick up a C; it’s a D- for batting & a B for defense.
