Anthony Campbell: “I’m ready”

Anthony Campbell has been one of the breakout players from camp. The 6'7, 300-pound Polk County native, originally from Jamaica, met with reporters to discuss his progress:

On his improvement: It's been a process. I've just been trusting the coaches and everybody else around me, like my teammates. Everybody’s been pushing me. I’m focusing on the technique and getting better each day.

On his mindset after not having significant playing time last year: It was kind of depressing a little bit because I thought I was ready. But I like to focus on myself. Coach Taylor has been pushing me and saying, “Focus on your footwork.” So I know I wasn't ready, but now I'm ready.

On his journey to Miami: My journey was kind of open. I started out at Independence, Kansas, and then I went to ULM (Louisiana Monroe), and then I came to Miami. I hit the portal in 2023, in the spring, and then Miami hit me up about it. I had a couple scholarships, offers, and Miami just hit home because I’ve got family around here. I'm from Central Florida, too, so it's home. I don't want to go anywhere else. I've been away from home since 2019, and then I came back to Miami.

On his weight: I came in at 290. I’ve put on 10 pounds. I got stronger in the weight room, a lot more physical, faster for a big guy. I'm 300 pounds now.

On who he is learning from: I would say my whole position group, because we push each other. Mesidor is like the leader of that pack. I would say Mesidor and Bain. I'll be watching their footsteps, how they work in practice. They push us a lot.

On Akheem Mesidor: He’s a dog. He comes to work every day. Everyone that has watched him is trying to himself just like him.

I know fall camp storylines are all sunshine and rainbows but one thing I hear in almost every interview is this team is tight nit and constantly pushing each other. If true, this is the thing that makes good teams great. I'm breaking my own rule and drinking the Kool-Aid.

Mesidor was such a huge loss last year. If he stays healthy him + Bain gonna cause A LOT of problems
And Alston isn’t being talked about enough for his ability to generate pressure. If those four DEs are healthy you literally can’t double Bain. If you can’t double Bain I believe across our entire schedule outside of FSU maybe who does have a solid OL there isn’t a team that can match that for four quarters with their OL.

I think it’s ok to have a cup. Usually when you have a top qb, a good o-line, and a good d-line you win a lot of games. When is the last time Miami had all that at the same time?

I am with you. We will find out if the leadership is real with less stupid penalties and better discipline. For me it has to improve for Miami to live up to expectations.

If this guy can be a legit option as the DT3-4, that is great (i.e. 2 deep). Will need someone from Moten/Horton/AC to adequately fill that 3rd-4th DT spot.

I am interested to see how he is after his injuries. I mean 2 years ago he was our best player on the team and we had some NFL guys. But I agree getting him back is huge if he is even close to prior form and from all the reports thus far he looks great

We need all the help we can get. Transfer portal will help us and it will also hurt us (notice when he said “it was depressing because I thought I was ready”).

Most of these guys come in feeling like they can play - and for good reason, as they’ve all been highly recruited by D1 programs that have told them how good they are and how bad they’re needed - so it’s understandable to feel letdown when you get on campus and you have to wait or you’re told you’re not quite ready etc etc.

One of the key factors to watch during the portal era is which Head Coaches are able to utilize the portal when needed and ALSO re-recruit their own players to stay - which is why Dabo Swinney hates it, just another item added to a coaches pile, and a HUGE one at that.

Portal era is seriously going to test the depth across the nation - BUT - it will also even the playing field a bit more, which imo, is ultimately good for the college game.

It's been awhile considering he hurt that foot last September, I'm sure he's ready to roll.

If those 4 stay healthy I don't care who the OL is cuz at some point the law of averages catches up to any OL when you can rotate that many good pass rushers all game. Eventually all OL's get got when going against monsters like we will have for 60 minutes.

As far as being medically cleared I agree 100%. My comment was just like a guy coming off an ACL, at some point injuries make you lose a step and I am hoping he is back to 2022 form.

Eric Maclain said in his team preview that he can't wait to watch this O-line work, and he thinks it is unfair for other teams how good we are along the O-line.

True. I feel like if he wasn't looking like 2022 version D Money or Cribby would've dropped some intel to temper our expectations.
