After landing offer from Barry, Carr talks Canes

Since being hired in early January, new Miami offensive line coach Butch Barry has been using his Midwest ties to try and bring talent to Coral Gables. The former Central Michigan coach has spent his first month with UM scouting prospects up north and has thrown out plenty of offers in the state of Michigan. One of those went to 2020 Oak Park (MI) 3-star WR Maliq Carr, who has nearly 25 Division I offers in the early going so far this cycle.

“It was amazing,” Carr said of his UM offer. “Coach Barry called me and told me. He seems like a cool guy so far.”

Now that he has the offer, Carr says his interest in the Canes has never been higher, but he used to watch Miami growing up and feels UM has always been a program he’s had an eye on.

“My interest in Miami has always been high,” Carr said. “It has always been a dream school of mine. I used to watch them all the time growing up.”

In terms of visit plans, Carr is coming off a visit to the local school, the University of Michigan, just this past weekend in Ann Arbor. Getting down to Miami can be a challenge to many out of state prospects, but Carr doesn’t see an issue, and plans to see UM’s campus sometime soon.

“I can’t say yet,” Carr said of a Miami visit. “I’m definitely planning a visit, just don’t know when yet. I don’t have any other visits set up either.”

As he is in Big 10 country, Carr has been pursued by pretty much every big-time school in the region, and cites Wisconsin, Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame, and Purdue as schools that are coming at him the hardest right now. However, Carr is not the only Oak Park High rising senior that is making waves in the 2020 class: 5-star OG Justin Rogers and 4-star CB Enzo Jennings also have gotten plenty of attention and have also received Miami offers from Barry. Carr says the three talk frequently about attending the same school for college.

“We just got to all be comfortable and obviously have the same offer,” Carr said.

On a team with plenty of Power 5 level talent, Carr stood out with his 6’6” 215 pound frame that he used to become a redzone threat in his junior season.

“I had 21 catches for 815 yards and 10 touchdowns last year,” Carr said. “We ended up losing in districts. Still have senior year to make it right.”

A decision will come by the end of the 2019 calendar year, as Carr already has a special day in mind for his announcement.

“October 11th, it’s my birthday,” Carr said on his decision date. “I’m just looking for a place with the right feeling and somewhere I can play right away.”

Butch needs to stay in his lane and focus on the trenches so we don't miss on players like 2020 OG Dallas Fincher who recently committed to Mich St despite getting the Miami offer last month. Apparently he is also a MSU legacy player. I wonder how much research Barry is actually doing with these kids, because the other kid he offered from Michigan is practically signed and delivered to ND if does well at their camp this summer.

We grew WR on trees in Florida, it's the linemen we need to import.

Go Canes

I agree about linemen but the Sec seems to buy our top local guys so lets hunt everywhere. I am native son of Miami but THE U has roots everywhere and is worldwide brand like ND. There are no and should be no limits on our ground.

If he can’t land quality OL prospects I don’t expect Barry to be here long. He better turn up the heat on local OL Walker. No way that kid should end up in Columbia. Columbia SC is a complete **** hole and there program is a bigger joke then Duke

So go national but don't offer any legacy kids. Only national kids who have zero ties to any schools. 🤣🤣

Michiganders are extremely parochial. I don't remember a recruit from Michigan coming to Miami.

The real prize is the 5* guard....

You should ensure you teach him what he should focus on

Amen. WTF is he looking at WRs in Michigan for? We have hundreds in our backyard. Bring in those big Midwestern boys on the O-Line. You need to recruit the OOS kids that you can't get or find at home or they're a top prospect like Haselwood. Maybe this kid is at that level and hasn't received a bump in his rating. I hope Barry doesn't turn into Al Golden 2.0 on the recruiting trail.

You guys are tough. He was obviously looking for lineman and saw this WR and threw him an offer. Offers don’t mean ****, it’s all about who you actively recruit. IMO the staff should offer every 4/5 star kid early on and then set their board and adjust.

Cameron binion 5 star d end says hello.

Walker isn’t ending up in Columbia. Don’t be a moron.

It’s not uncommon for coaches to recruit an area this early on. It’s like ******* amateur hour here.

Butch is doing his job.

As Daddy always told me, "Don't EVER leave any money on the table."

Butch is knocking on lots of doors - apparently here - in the same house.

You are a joke buddy

Listen smart guy, you don't send your 5 year former NFL oline coach to recruits players other than olinemen. It is a waste of his cachet, he should be spending every minute he can trying to make inroads with blue chip olinemen an building a network at high schools known to produce quality linemen.

Go Canes

Being a position coach doesn't mean you only recruit players at the position you coach. Nor does it mean he and other staff members aren't coming hard at local OLinemen. Coaches generally are assigned areas where they have existing contacts.
