2022 Miami Edison (FL) ATH Syveion Ellis has been a Florida Gators commit since April of 2019, but that hasn’t stopped him from stepping foot on the campus of the University of Miami twice in the past two months.
“It was great, I loved it,” Ellis said of his most recent UM visit. “I liked the experience, great city vibes. It was me and a few teammates, we were able to watch them practice - it was extremely competitive and high-paced.”
As Ellis plays both WR and DB at Miami Edison, the Hurricanes are currently recruiting him as an athlete without a set position, and they simply just want to have his skillset on the roster regardless of where he ends up.
“I mainly talked with coach (Manny) Diaz and coach (Stephen) Field on the visit, but I also spoke with coach (Rob) Likens as well,” Ellis said. “Coming from Arizona State, he has a proven track record and he was just telling me about some of the big-time receivers he’s coached like N’Keal Harry. For him to say I have similar talent to guys like that was just an honor.”
The 6-5 200 pound prospect is originally a Georgia native that recently enrolled at Miami Edison after playing his sophomore season up at Brunswick High, the same school where a pair of recent Hurricanes graduated from.
“I watched DeeJay Dallas and Zalon’tae Hillery and all those guys at Miami, and I know them personally because they went to my old school,” Ellis said. “I was just talking to Zalon’tae recently on the visit, he told me ‘Keep it real, go with your own mind. Don’t let a coach make your decision. Go with what’s most comfortable for you and your family.’”
Along with a built-in personal connection to the UM program, Ellis says he is well-aware of the tradition and history that comes with being a Hurricane.
“It’s the U, everybody knows what it is,” Ellis said. “Either you’re going to join them or you’re not.”
While Ellis admits that he is going to continue to highly consider Miami and make other visits, the Miami Edison star says that he is still sticking with his UF commitment for the moment.
“I’m pretty locked in,” Ellis said. “I’m still young so I’m still visiting schools, I’m still going to keep my eyes and my ears open.”
In addition to Miami, Ellis is also considering FSU and Georgia, and says he’d like to make trips to both this spring. What are some factors that Ellis is looking for in a school that might potentially get him to flip his pledge?
“Somewhere that’s going to benefit me. Somewhere close to home is a major a key in my commitment. And then coaches that keep it 100 with me and tell me how it is.”
