Miami’s 2021 recruiting class already has one tight end committed in Kahlil Brantley, but this has not stopped the staff from offering more tight end prospects. The most recent of these offerees is Hart County (GA) TE Cane Berrong, who received his offer in late March while visiting Miami for junior day.
“We did the junior day, watched film and took pictures. While I was with the tight end recruits my parents were listening to academics and academic support. Coach (Stephen) Field just told me and my parents before we left to make sure we came to his office and that's where he told me I had a full scholarship to play football at the University of Miami. Then coach (Jorge) Baez took us on a tour.”
Berrong’s parents are both Hurricane fans, so this was an exciting moment for the entire family.
“It was special. I've been waiting for so long. My dad and brother were really happy.”
Despite Miami inviting Berrong to Paradise Camp last summer and seeing him up close when he had no offers, 16 other schools (including UGA, Alabama, Notre Dame, LSU, and Ohio State) eventually beat the Hurricanes to the punch to offer him a scholarship before Miami did. However, Berrong does not see this as a negative for his recruitment or Miami’s chances.
“It opened the door for me to go out, see other schools, and build relationships with other coaches. There is still a lot of time, and I left feeling like I could live there for college. I'm going to decide on 5 to 10 schools to focus on this summer and go from there.”
One of the reasons Berrong feels as if he could go to school in Miami is his comfort with the campus.
“The campus is small. I like that. They are putting restaurants and shops in the dorms, so no need to leave. It'll be like its own city.”
Another reason is how Dan Enos plans on using tight ends within his offense.
“Well, they're going to definitely use the tight ends. A lot of motion. Sometimes three tight ends on the field. I think I would create big problems for the defense and create mismatches.”
Berrong visited both LSU and Clemson within the last week and will visit UGA, NC State, Virginia Tech, and Penn State over the next few days. Berrong does not know for sure when he will get back down to Miami, but he wants a visit to happen sometime over the summer or fall.
“I'm going to try, definitely in the fall. Paradise is at a bad time if it's still in late July. In Georgia, our acclimation week is usually that week, and we have to practice every day to be able to practice in pads the first week. I will see what I can do though.”
