2021 Edgewater (FL) LB Deshawn Troutman signed with the Miami Hurricanes earlier today. Troutman is Miami's 6th signee of the day.
The 6-1, 205-pounder is currently a consensus 3-star prospect according to major recruiting services. According to the 247Sports Composite Ranking, Troutman is the #685 player nationally in 2021, the #33 ILB in the country, and the #92 player in Florida.
Recruiting Story
Deshawn Troutman plays his high school football in Orlando, but he is originally from South Florida. That South Florida connection would prove to be pivotal for Troutman since he was not able to visit Miami after receiving his offer on January 22nd of this year. Troutman also played youth football with other Miami commits while living in South Florida and had good relationships with many commits in the class. All of this made Troutman the obvious choice to turn to at linebacker once the board shook itself out. Troutman committed to Miami on May 27th and has been solid ever since. He committed to UM over offers from FSU, Louisville, West Virginia, and Minnesota among others.
Evaluation
Taking a look at the tape, you can see Troutman flashes qualities of a modern-day inside linebacker. Quick-twitch athlete that meets ballcarriers in the hole swiftly and with authority. Shows great sideline-to-sideline speed and can cover a lot of ground in patrolling the middle of the field, which also allows him to have elite potential as a coverage linebacker. Impressive read and reaction instincts to blow up plays before they get going, and he is a beast at shutting down the screen game. Understands angles well to knife into the opponent’s backfield. Goes for the highlight hit often, and his tackling form can break down at times. Improved play strength will help prevent him from getting washed out of too many plays at the next level. Would like to see more of him taking on blocks at the point of attack and stacking and shedding them to make plays.
The Team
Miami will have seven true linebackers on the roster already when Troutman arrives on campus in January, although some of the upperclassmen could choose not to use their remaining years of eligibility.
Redshirt Probability: 6/10
Troutman will enroll early, which always improves your chances of early playing time, but Miami is very high on what they have brought in at linebacker during the two previous cycles. Guys like Sam Brooks, Avery Huff, Corey Flagg, and Tirek Austin-Cave will probably have too big of a leg up on Troutman for him to crack the rotation as a true freshman, but Troutman might be more physically talented than all of them, so there’s still a chance he sees time if he gets the scheme down and his weight up.
