It’s no secret the Canes have had their fair share of offensive line issues in recent years. Recruiting at the position has improved at the position since the arrival of Mark Richt, but there’s still a ways to go if the Canes are going to compete with the best of the best depth-wise in the trenches. In Surge19, 3-star C Kingsley Eguakun and 4-star OT Michael Tarquin are on board, but the staff is still looking to add more bodies on the line. One prospect they have identified that can do just that is Plant (FL) 4-star OG Will Putnam, and the talented linemen is in constant contact with Miami’s coaches.
“I talk with coach Searels and coach Baez and sometimes coach (Mark) Richt,” Putnam said. “I’ve been in contact with them for about a year so I know they are good people.”
Putnam has already visited the Canes once and it was probably the best visit timing of the year: he was at Hard Rock Stadium for Miami’s thrilling blowout of #3 Notre Dame and the atmosphere was electric.
“My most recent visit to Miami was this past football season when they played Notre Dame,” Putnam said. “I’d like to get back there.”
There’s some debate on whether Putnam will fit best at guard or tackle at the next level. While Putnam will play anywhere he’s asked to, he prefers guard and that’s also where the Canes see his highest ceiling at as well.
“I have always liked guard more, but I’m fine with playing anywhere on the offensive line,” Putnam said. “Miami is looking at me more as an interior guy.”
So, what is really drawing Putnam to Miami?
“Miami’s coaching staff are good people, and that’s is the biggest reason why I’m interested in them,” said Putnam.
Putnam names no top groups or leaders as of now, and will let the process play out a bit before he starts narrowing things down. Putnam actually made the move from Chatham, IL to Tampa, FL with his family last year and helped his new Plant team to the state semi’s. As for his final year in high school, Putnam feels that getting healthy will be key to a big senior season for him.
“It was a transition coming from Illinois down to Florida, I gave my team my all and we made it to the 7A semi-finals,” Putnam said. “I feel like I can play better, I had to deal with some injuries during the season, but coming into senior year healed up, I think I can perform even better.”
