It’s not very rare to see a high-school athlete make a play that lands on ESPN’s top ten plays of the week. However, it’s not very often that a high-school athlete gets invited to a convention in Los Angeles for ESPN’s Sports Science awards. 2015 American Heritage (Fla.) quarterback Torrance Gibson got the opportunity to fly out to Los Angeles and be apart of a ESPN Sports Science special for the spectacular play he made in the state championship game.
“They invited me because they saw the play I made in states when I scrambled to the other side of the field and then came back to the other side and threw a touchdown to Dredrick Snelson. It’s been a great experience; saw a lot of celebrities, met a lot of people and it was just a great experience.”
Gibson is planning on working with the South Florida Express this offseason and it provides him with a great opportunity to not only get better, but also play with other top talents around Dade and Broward County.
“Just go out there and compete and have fun; I’m trying to go out there and get better every day and keep running. I’m looking to play with Sam Bruce Jr., he’s an explosive receiver and one of the best receivers coming out of 2016. Of course with my teammates as well with Tarvarus McFadden, Dredrick Snelson and underrated receiver Brandon Johnson.”
The 6’4 200 pound quarterback cherishes the opportunity to learn from highly experience coaches in Kevin Beard, Patrick Surtain and Sam Madison and he certainly doesn’t take it for granted.
“It’s great because I can learn a lot from those guys, they teach me a lot when I’m out there and I just listen. I’m all ears when they talk to me and I can’t wait to play another season with them.”
In terms of recruiting for the American Heritage star, it’s hard to find a school that hasn’t offered him yet. While he holds over 20 offers, he doesn’t hold any leaders or top list of schools.
“No one is the highest, I’m just open right now.”
Despite having no leaders, there are three schools that are recruiting Gibson harder than most.
“Tennessee, Ohio State and I want to say Miami.”
Ohio State is a school that intrigues the 5 star recruit not only because of their large amount of interest, but their offense and how he fits in.
“Urban Meyer, he’s been talking to me and telling me I’m there #1 guy. They really want me and the Buckeyes are coming hard.” said Gibson. “They use Braxton Miller like my coaches use me in highschool. They run the same offense and use a running quarterback a lot. We’re just similar players me and Braxton Miller.”
Another school that joined the mix for the South Florida stud prospect is the SEC Champion Auburn Tigers. While the Tigers may be late to the party, he assures he’s highly interested in them and finds their offensive scheme favorable as well.
“They run a spread offense, the coaches are great especially coach (Rhett) Lashlee. He’s a great coach and he knows what he’s doing. They have a great quarterback in (Nick) Marshall too, same as Braxton Miller, but a little faster.”
While the these two out of states schools are making a hard push for Gibson, the 3 main Florida schools are putting in a good amount of effort into recruiting him.
The Florida State Seminoles have also been in contact with Gibson and he talked about his conversations with head coach Jimbo Fisher.
“Jimbo Fisher, we talk a lot. He told me he’s going to look at my film and tell me what I need to do to become a great quarterback.”
The Hometown Hurricanes are also doing their part to try and lure the nationally ranked prospect to Coral Gables. Reports came out weeks ago that Gibson was disappointed in the ‘Canes recruiting efforts and cited a lack of communication. Has that changed?
“Yeah it’s gotten better; they hadn’t talked to me for a couple weeks, but now it’s picking back up.”
Gibson has been a target for Miami for quite some time and he cites that as one of his main reasons of interest in the school.
“They’ve been recruiting me since 8th grade and anytime someone’s been recruiting you since 8th grade it means they want you bad. Me and Miami, all the coaches have that connection and I can talk about anything around them and I appreciate that because they’ve known me for so long that it feels like home.”
The dual threat passer is being recruited by Head Coach Al Golden, Offensive Coordinator James Coley and Running Back coach Hurlie Brown.
As far as a deciding when to make a commitment, Gibson is in no rush and plans on waiting it out until Signing Day if necessary.
